Gameplay and Mechanics

God of War series was always a flashy one, but in this new, elemental world with Norse creatures, Kratos must find a way to teach his son what to expect in this wild world! 

New world means new creatures but also new abilities, new main weapon, and even more vengeance. Deal with monsters in physical combat, cherish the story, and help your son Atreus understand that you always loved him unconditionally!

Without further ado, let’s get into some details about what made this game gain almost a perfect score among critics!

More Realistic Combat

It’s a visceral world, and you are a visceral man! Take out your big battle axe – a new addition to the series – and smash the enemies while fighting for survival! This time, it’s not as easy and flashy as in previous editions of the God of War franchise.

The game brings up a slower pace of fighting, a more realistic impact of attacks, and an over-the-shoulder camera, giving an intimate way of looking at things. 

Compelling Story

It’s a lot about the story! You have defeated all of the Gods of Olymp, so you are kind of an ultimate badass when it comes to crushing some holy heads.

Your wife – Faye – passed away and, as people always do, she had a last wish – to scatter her ashes on the highest peak in the nine realms. Of course, you couldn’t just say – well, it is a hassle to be honest, how about a funeral? Thus, you have entered a world of giant serpents, people with hammers as weapons, and many, many more!

The plot is just a trick to guide you through the many beautiful and scary parts of Norse Mythology. You meet Freya, World Serpent, some weird strong guy who just punches you out of nowhere – normal stuff. 

Visuals

There’s one thing to admit about God of War  – this game just looks beautiful. Everything is just so colorful, full of life and excitement! The designers put a lot of effort into creating a visually stunning world with great imagery from Norse mythology with a lot of accuracy

Clear sky, moving grass, faces, and water – the attention to detail is groundbreaking. Shadowing and lighting are just perfect, and the amount of moveable objects is crazy.

But – the best thing about this is the art style. Artwork based on Nordic mythology just feels more alive and grounded in reality. It’s not just another silly monster with a silly face.

It’s really embedded into some way of thinking about the world. The design has depth to it and something special. You really don’t see it often in the modern world of fantasy gaming where elves are high and aristocratic and dwarfs short and crude with humans somewhere in the middle.

Voice Acting and Sounds

It is not common to single out this detail about a game, but you just can not miss the incredible work of the God of War cast.

Christopher Judge as Kratos is just stunning. His deep and dark voice crawls on your back, giving you chills. Zany and grumpy teen Atreus, voiced by Sunny Sulijic, truly adds to the character. You can feel the connection between them, that they care about each other and want what’s best for them.

Furthermore, Bear McCreary, known for such hits as The Walking Dead or Battlestar Gallactica, was really on top of his form when creating music for God of War! The sounds are realistic and sharp, while the music enhances the total gaming experience.
